The Flagstaff Police Department, along with the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, has launched their new “Text-to-9-1-1” service. The service started Tuesday. A user can send a text message to “9-1-1” and it will be routed to the dispatch center. Officials recommend the service who are hearing and speech impaired, when a person is in a dangerous situation and calling would make it worse, or you tried to call 9-1-1, but can’t get reception. When you text, always provide your exact location and nature of the emergency, remember to silence your phone if you are in a dangerous situation, avoid using slang, social media jargon or abbreviations, don’t send photos, videos or emojis and don’t send a group text. Remember, during an emergency or life-threatening situation when seconds matter, a voice call is the best and fastest way for the 9-1-1 call taker to obtain and deliver life-saving information; whereas, a text message may take longer.
