Council chambers was full of people Tuesday night in support of a citizens petition to the Flagstaff City Council regarding climate change. The group wants council to approve a resolution that would declare a climate emergency in the city. In the nearly three hours spent on the topic, most who wanted to speak supported the resolution, however there were those who spoke against it. Council voted 7-0 to move the petition forward. The city’s legal team will go through the petition and the issue will be placed on a future agenda. Within the petition there was also a call to move the Sustainability Department to a division, which the city manager was already in the process of doing. Mayor Coral Evans tells KAFF News the city is already doing many things under the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan that the petition asked to be done. Tuesday night Evans challenged council to be “bold” in making decisions going forward in regards to issues such as affordable housing, climate change and issues that affect residents of Flagstaff.
