The first known case of the COVID-19 Omicron variant has been discovered in Yavapai County. Officials with the Arizona Department of Health Services and Yavapai County Community Health Services confirmed the case Wednesday that it was someone in their 50s, who tested positive the day after Thanksgiving. Health officials say the person seems to be recovering without hospitalization. Yavapai County health director Leslie Horton says “It’s natural to be concerned, but we should avoid overreacting to this news.” Horton says “since late 2020, as different variants have come along, COVID-19 vaccines have consistently proven highly effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death. Our best response to the Omicron variant, as with any other variant of concern, is renewing our focus on vaccination and following recommendations, such as staying home when sick, that are proven to reduce the spread.” Pfizer reported Wednesday that their three shot vaccine is effective against the Omicron variant. Testing with the other vaccines continue, including research into the variant itself. Health officials recommend those five-years-old and older get vaccinated, and those over 18 should get the booster shot. They also recommend getting the flu shot and if you test positive for COVID, look into monoclonal antibody treatments. For more information log onto azhealth.gov.
