Clean up will begin soon at the abandoned Poland and Eugene mines within the Bradshaw Mountains on the Prescott National Forest. The Eugene Mine is on public land within the forest, while part of the Poland Mine is on privately owned land. Past mining left around 45-hundred cubic yards of waste rock and tailings on the sites. The Forest Service and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality will conduct the environmental cleanup to reduce the potential migration of mine waste materials that contain arsenic and lead, that has seeped into the surrounding environment and groundwater due to surface runoff, erosion and wind dispersion. The cleanup process will take place during the day between now and February of 2022. Heavy equipment will be used in the process. The mines are located near Poland Junction near Mayer.
