The National Park Service plans to reopen the east entrance to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon Thursday. The original plan was to reopen in May, but officials with the park and the Navajo Nation agreed it was safe to reopen on that side of the canyon. The east entrance has been closed since April 1st of 2020. The intent was to minimize visitor traffic through the Navajo Nation and other communities in the area, respecting the health and safety need of park neighbors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Park officials say no services, including food, gas and the campground will be available at Desert View until further notice. The park is open through the main gate outside of Tusayan. The South Rim has seen a drop of three million visitors from 2019 to 2020 due to the closures.
