Coconino’s Lapsley, Bennett Named Region Coach And Offensive Player Of The Year

Coconino Panthers head coach Mike Lapsley and junior running back Zach Bennett were named the Grand Canyon Region’s coach and offensive player of the year Tuesday. Lapsley led the Panthers to a 9-1 record and Coconino’s first playoff appearance in 14 years. Bennett has set Coconino’s single season rushing record with 1,650 yards and has scored 23 touchdowns on the season. Panthers on the all-region first team include: defensive back Andy Ruiz, linebacker Manuel Cardoza, offensive lineman Riley Darnell, running back Zach Bennett. Flagstaff Eagles on the all-region first team include: running back Luis Jaramillo, kick returner Jace Wetzel, linebacker Stephen Canizales and punt returner Luke Canizales, The Eagles finished the season with a 6-4 record. Coconino will play in the first round of the 4A state playoffs this Friday at home against Yuma’s Gila Ridge.
