Even with messaging along Northern Arizona highway saying no campfires in the Coconino National Forest, unless it was in a controlled campground, there were still numerous illegal campfires over the Memorial Day Weekend. The highest day for reported illegal campfires was 23 on Sunday. There were 36 total Friday and Saturday and 14 on Monday for 73 total as of 9 p.m. There was only one actual fire reported, which was Sunday morning that only burned a half-acre. It isn’t known if any of builders of any of the campfires were cited. Illegal campfires under Stage One restrictions are subject to a fine from $100 to $5,000 and/or a year in jail.
