The Coconino Panthers once again jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half, but couldn’t hold on as they fell to the Poston Broncos Friday night, 29-28 at Cromer Stadium. Cooper French scored the first of his three touchdowns on the opening drive to put Coconino up 7-0 in the first quarter. Cooper’s brother Bridger scored Coconino’s second touchdown and Cooper scored the Panthers third in the second quarter to go up 21-0. Poston Butte would score on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Max Larson to Conner Lopez to put the Broncos on the board, but Coconino still led at halftime 21-7. The Broncos would cut the lead to 21-14 as Larson found Lopez again for a 41-yard touchdown strike. However, Cooper French would score his third touchdown late in the third quarter to go up 28-14 after three. Poston Butte would trail by one with 4:55 to go after Larson hit Lopez for a touchdown for the third time. Poston Butte went for two and converted on a jump pass from running back Gaven Thrower to put the Broncos up 29-28. Coconino would move the ball down the field, but the drive stalled when Panther quarterback Enoch Watson threw an incomplete pass on fourth down to seal the game for the Broncos. Cooper French had 28 carries for 253 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. Conner Lopez had seven catches for 200 yards and three touchdowns for the Broncos. Coconino falls to 1-2 on the season and will try and regroup and head back down to the valley to take on the Apache Junction Prospectors next Friday night.
