Coconino County has partnered with SpaceX to deliver Starlink high-speed internet service to 45 rural households. The county began conversations with SpaceX in 2019. The result of the meetings was securing accounts for the county to utilize SpaceX beta technology and make internet accessible to rural areas of Northern Arizona. The trial began back on May 6th for homes located in an area near Tuba City, where there was no service previously. Each household received a satellite dish and a year of service at no cost. Those homes can continue the service after a year by paying a monthly fee. “This journey would not have been possible without the continuous teamwork from SpaceX, County Management, and our Board of Supervisors,” said Coconino County CIO Matt Fowler. He says “we rely heavily on our public and private partners to offer internet where it historically has been unavailable. This is a truly exciting moment.” The homes include people from the Navajo, Hopi and San Juan Southern Paiute tribes.
