Coconino County Opens Sandbagging Stations In The Pipeline Fire Area

The Coconino County Flood Control District has set up several sandbag stations in the Pipeline Fire area for residents to install around their homes in preparation of post-wildfire flooding. Sandbags and sandbag materials are available at the Copeland Detention Basin, which is located off of Highway 89 at Copeland Lane. That station has both a self-serve sandbag station and pre-made sandbags. Residents are asked to being their own shovels and or buckets to help them make sandbags at the self-serve station. There are two other self-serve stations at East Brandis Way. One is near Highway 89 and one is at Brandis Way and Ostrich Lane. Another is located in the parking lot of the Silver Saddle Store at 9001 Highway 89. More self-serve stations are set to open in Timberline and Wupatki Trails by Monday afternoon. County officials say the sandbags are just for mitigating flood risk to primary residences and shouldn’t be used for outbuildings, corrals, etc. For more information, including a video of how to create a sandbag wall, log onto coconino.az.gov/2936/Sandbag-information. If people need help with sandbags call the County’s Call Center at (928) 679-8525. Volunteers are also needed. If you would like to volunteer to help the sandbagging effort log onto the United Way of Northern Arizona’s Volunteer Hub.
