Coconino County Jail Housing Six COVID-19 Inmates, Stresses Lower Arrests Due To Possible Case Rise

The Coconino County Detention Center in Flagstaff has six COVID-19 positive inmates in its facility as of last Friday. Officials say there are no staff members who have tested positive. All inmates who tested positive have been placed in 14-day quarantine. Since May 5th, there have been 22 inmates and 11 staff who have tested positive for the virus. All staff who tested positive have recovered. The inmates who have tested positive had no significant health issues and didn’t require health care outside the facility. Officials say they have seen an uptick in the number of daily arrests, which could lead to a rise in cases. The Sheriff’s Office says they are encouraging deputies and other law enforcement to only arrest and book people for violent or victim related charges and to consider cite and release alternatives.
