The Coconino County Board of Supervisors discussed a Pre-Wildfire Season report from the Emergency Management Team on Tuesday. The team discussed how COVID-19 had affected planned mitigations for 2020 such as halting prescribed burns. Burns are planned in the Coconino and Kaibab National Forest for Fiscal Year 2021, with a goal of 29-thousand acres in the Kaibab National Forest, and 38-thousand acres for the Coconino National Forest. Wes Dison, Director of the Emergency Management Team, also touched on the new Coconino County Wildfire Defense Ordinance, which restricts certain fire related activities. The team is currently working on how to apply the law in cases of grazing or branding fires on ranches, as well as how to address fires used in ceremonial events.
