Coconino Clinches A Playoff Spot, Flagstaff Stuns Seton Catholic Friday

It was a great night for high school football in Flagstaff Friday. The Coconino Panthers used a tough defense and a strong running game to blank Lee Williams on homecoming 27-0 and claim a spot in the 4A state playoffs. The win clinches at least a share of the 4A Grand Canyon Region title for the Panthers and improves their record to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the region. Coconino was led by junior running back Zach Bennett, who had 215 yards on 34 carries and two touchdowns. The Panthers had 341 yards rushing and they held the Volunteers to just 66 yards of total offense. The Flagstaff Eagles are in playoff mode as they have to win out to possibly get into the 4A state playoffs this season. Joe Weidinger had two touchdown passes, including in the fourth quarter to lead the Eagles to a 27-24 win over the Seton Catholic Sentinals in the Skydome. The Eagles are 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the region. Next week, Coconino host Cactus at Cromer Stadium. Flagstaff travels to Cottonwood to take on Mingus.
