The Coconino Panthers boys basketball team avenged their only loss of the season Thursday, by beating the Bradshaw Mountain Bears in a defensive battle, 36-35, in Prescott Valley. Senior guard Preston Olney led the Panthers with 17 points and Hayden Nez had seven points, four coming in the fourth quarter. Both teams played stellar defense throughout the game, but Olney hit a corner three with ten-seconds to play to take a three-point lead. Manuel Cardoza hit one of two free throws to ice the game for Coconino. The Panthers finish the regular season with a 14-1 record, 10-1 in the Grand Canyon Region and will likely have home court advantage for the first two rounds of the 4A state playoffs. Bradshaw Mountain plays Friday at Mohave to finish the regular season and will likely open next week’s playoffs on the road. In other games Thursday, the Flagstaff Eagles boys team went to Kingman and beat Lee Williams 57-47. They finish 9-9 overall and 5-6 in the region and will now wait to see if they will get into the playoffs. In girls action, Coconino beat Bradshaw Mountain 71-49 and Flagstaff beat Lee Williams, 50-43, winning three games in three straight days to finish the regular season.
