CCSO Search And Rescue Tend To Stranded Hikers Recently In Munds Canyon

Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue crews responded to a call of stranded hikers last Friday in Munds Canyon south of Flagstaff. The group consisted of an adult male and three juveniles after they split from a larger group of ten hikers. The group intended to hike Munds Canyon from I-17 to Oak Creek. However, after realizing they had underestimated the distance to Oak Creek Canyon they attempted to go back to their vehicle near the interstate. The group became tired and unable to return to the vehicle. Rescuers were able to contact the group at around 6 p.m. and were able to reach them at around 7:45 p.m. They were guided out of the canyon by a rope rescue system. Once out of the canyon, they were given a ride back to Schnebly Hill Road where they were reunited with family members. There were no injuries. Remember if you are outdoors, bring extra water, food and clothing, along with navigational equipment, a flashlight, shelter equipment and a fully-charged cell phone.
