Coconino County Search and Rescue responded to a report of three stranded hikers that were stuck on the Touched by an Angel climbing area Sunday night in Sedona. Officials say the climbers were on their way down, from a multi-pitch climb, when their rope become stuck and they were unable to retrieve it to continue to rappel off of the climb. The climbers were around 160-feet above the ground at the time. Rescuers were going to rig a hoist to a DPS helicopter to rescue the hikers, but they didn’t have enough hoist cable on the aircraft. So a plan was devised to lower the climbers a new rope, clothing, food, water and a radio from the helicopter using a longer rope. The helicopter returned to the area at around 3:30 a.m. Monday. It was decided to wait until daylight to conduct the rescue. At around 6:30 a.m. the climbers began to rappel down and all were safely off the cliff by 6:45 a.m. All of the hikers were experienced climbers and were uninjured.
