The Bureau of Land Management has approved a two-decade extension of the ongoing San Francisco Peaks mineral withdrawal. The original order was published in 2000 and it expired last week. It withdrew nearly 75-thousand acres in the San Francisco Peaks/Mt. Elden recreation area from settlement, sale, location or entry under the general land and mining laws, but not from leasing under the mineral laws. The extension is aimed at protecting the cultural significance, capital investments and dispersed recreational values in the defined recreational area. Coconino County Supervisor Liz Archuleta is in favor of the extension saying: “this proposed order will ensure that the peaks, which are an iconic part of our community’s identity, will continue to be preserved.”
