Scottsdale Police arrested 35-year-old Nicholas Cowan Sunday night in connection with the shooting of a Phoenix Police officer Thursday. The shooting happened near the Loop 101 by the intersection of Cave Creek and Beardsley roads Thursday afternoon. Police originally responded to a domestic violence call where a woman asked to meet police at a gas station, because she was afraid of a confrontation. When officers met up with her, Cowan arrived at the gas station in a car. When an officer walked toward him, Cowan fired at the officer from inside the vehicle. The officer is a 24-year veteran of the department and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is recovering. Cowen has a connection to Prescott and Yavapai County. He was convicted on drug charges back in 2018. He was one of 15 people who were arrested after law enforcement carried out “Operation Blackwater,” which involved drug sales in Prescott and Prescott Valley. Cowan was sentenced to 18 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release after being charged with possession with intent to distribute heroin. Cowan was taken into custody after a brief standoff.
