A strong thunderstorm popped up over Timberline, Fernwood and Wupatki Trials at around noon Wednesday. The cell grew quickly to a severe level and didn’t move, dumping a lot of rain on the burn area in a short amount of time. County rain gauges measured a half-inch of rain in 15 minutes on Brandis Way and an inch in about a half-hour. Water rushed down the street and over 89, closing the highway in both directions for a couple of hours. Water collected quickly on Copeland Avenue and culverts built after the Schultz Fire on Campbell Avenue, collected debris and sent water across the road at a fast pace. Forecasters say an increased chance of heavy rain will take place Thursday through Saturday night. More flooding could take place in flood prone areas.
