A Missing 12-Year-Old Boy With Autism Is Found Safe Thanks To Search And Rescue Teams

Quick work by Yavapai County Search and Rescue, and many other, teams were able to find a missing 12-year-old boy with autism safe and sound Friday. YCSO received a call from Cottonwood Police in the afternoon, about the missing boy at the Black Canyon Day Use Recreational Area. The boy, who is nonverbal, was in the area with his grandfather and had walked away somewhere near the river’s edge. Deputies immediately called Search and Rescue and they went to work. Many assets were called in, including Back Country SAR, Cottonwood Police, the Verde Valley Fire Department with their swift water team, DPS and more. As more teams were arriving, the DPS helicopter searched a location near Thousand Trails and Highway 260, where a sighting of the boy was reported. The helicopter crew found the boy in a ravine and guided deputies to his location where he was hiding. Deputies were able to coax him out of the ravine gently and get him to safety. The boy was reunited with his family and was unhurt. The search, start to finish, took just two hours to complete.
