The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Department of Public Safety on reports of a fire Saturday afternoon just east of Highway 89. YCSO received the call at 4:15 a.m. regarding the fire near mile marker 354, which was only an hour after a separate fire near mile marker 340 was reported and put out by personnel. YCSO deputies arrived on the scene to the second fire and immediately began attempting to put the fire out with only supplies from their patrol vehicle; a shovel and a fire extinguisher. Deputies were able to contain the fire until an Ash Fork crew arrived to fully put it out. The fire was out by 7:44 a.m. and burnt 100×25 yards. Officials believe this fire, among others, was started by chains dragging from a vehicle and creating a spark. YCSO reminds residents to be aware of dragging chains and double-check they are off the road.
