Yavapai County Sheriff’s officials say they were recently contacted by a concerned citizen regarding a scam surrounding the Community Services Block Grant, or CSBG. The grant provides funds to alleviate the causes and conditions of poverty in communities. The person said a friend told her that a person could potentially receive $100-thousand dollars through the grant and to call a phone number in order to apply. When she called the fraudulent number, it didn’t take her long to catch on that it was a scam. Although she figured it was a scam, she is concerned her friend or others may not be as privy to scam. The Community Services Block Grant is real, but it doesn’t provide direct grants to individuals and doesn’t charge a fee for receiving a grant. If you or someone you know receives a message offering you a CSBG grant, or requesting a fee, contact the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Fraud Hotline 1-800-447-8477.
