Woman Pronounced Dead After Falling Into Colorado River At Grand Canyon National Park Saturday

A Chattanooga, Tennessee woman was pronounced dead after falling into the Colorado River on a commercial river trip at the Grand Canyon National Park near Pipe Creek Beach Saturday afternoon. The Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a call at around 2 p.m. on reports of a passenger who had fallen into the river. Commercial guides were able to assist her out of the water and began life-saving measures. Park rangers were flown to the scene where she was pronounced dead. The passenger was identified as 47-year-old Sheetal Patel. Patel was cooling off along the shore when she was caught by the current of the river. Patel had hiked into the canyon to meet the river trip at Phantom Ranch, before beginning her multi-day river trip. The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
