Two Teens With Gang Ties, Recently Pled Guilty To Crimes In Yavapai County Will Be Sentenced Soon

Two teens pled guilty recently in connection with gang crimes.  Eighteen-year-old Johnathan Mata of Prescott and 17-year-old Enrique Castillo-Barrios of Prescott Valley, pled guilty to aggravated assault.  Mata also pled guilty to assisting a criminal street gang and tampering with physical evident.  Castillo-Barrios pled guilty for endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm and a minor in possession of a firearm.  Prescott Police investigators found that Mata was the leader of a gang, “RMS,” that was attempting to establish itself in Prescott.  On June 30th, 2023, Mata came across an elderly homeless man who was sleeping near Granite Creek, and severely beat him causing multiple skull fractures and hearing loss.  Mata recorded the beating and posted it online.  Then on April 23rd, 2023 Castillo-Barrios, another suspected gang member, took a firearm to a carnival at the Prescott Rodeo grounds.  During an argument with a classmate, he pulled the gun from his waistband and fired multiple times at the ground, toward his classmate.  Castillo-Barrios fled, continuously shooting multiple times toward his classmate, shooting himself in the process.  Mata is scheduled to be sentenced May 13th and faces ten years in prison.  Castillo-Barrios will be sentenced April 15th and faces between five and 38 years in prison.
