Two Prescribed Burns Set For This Week For Areas South Of Flagstaff In The Coconino National Forest

Fire managers with the Coconino National Forest plan to conduct two prescribed burns this week south of Flagstaff. The Crater Sinks Project will be treated Tuesday. The project is around 669 acres about four miles west of Kachina Village. Officials say there has not been fire on the area in a long time so heavy smoke is expected. During the day, Flagstaff and Doney Park may be impacted by this burn, while Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon and the Verde Valley could see smoke settle in the nighttime hours. The burn will only take place on Tuesday. The second burn is the 3E Project, which consists of 256 acres three miles southeast of the Flagstaff Airport. The burn is planned between Tuesday and Thursday. This burn could impact Flagstaff, Kachina Village, Mountainaire and Munds Park. Prescribed burns are needed to reduce the build-up of hazardous fuel loads.
