Grand Canyon National Park provided an update regarding search and recovery efforts this morning, following a major flash flood in Bright Angel Canyon on Aug. 29.
According to the park, two bodies have been recovered. This presumably includes a 46-year-old male who was found near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River sometime before 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 30. The Coconino County Medical Examiner is investigating these incidents. No other information regarding the individuals has been released as of 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 31.
Additionally, assessment of the Transcanyon Waterline indicates that approximately 40% of it was damaged or destroyed. Stage 4 water restrictions are being implemented on the South Rim at noon on Aug. 31 due to the now limited water supply.
As of this time, visitors are asked to remain out of the closure area while search and recovery operations continue. This includes Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, the Phantom Ranch Canteen and cabins and the entire North Kaibab Trail.
There is a flood watch in effect for the entirety of northern and central Arizona, including the Grand Canyon and surrounding communities until midnight on Sept. 1.
