The ACLU is demanding that Mingus High School in Cottonwood stop flagging some students for their academic record. The group says students at the school, who have fallen behind in class, must openly wear red ID badges indicating their status. The badges distinguish them from other students who wear grey badges and the ACLU says it’s humiliating for the students. The school district says the red cards prevent juniors who don’t have enough credits for their grade level from leaving campus for lunch and it’s not about punishing the students for under performing. The ACLU says privacy and equal protection issues are at stake. The two sides are trying to find a resolution without going to court.
