Starting Sunday, Arizonans who have phone numbers with the 480, 928 and 520 area codes will have to begin ten-digit dialing for local calls. Lea Marquez-Peterson is the Chairwoman of the Arizona Corporation Commission and says “the National Suicide Hotline is being implemented throughout the nation and we need room for that number to be utilized.” The new number is 988 and will be similar to 911, which is a three-digit number those in distress can call. It’s expected to be operational by the summer of 2022. Callers in the affected area codes will hear a recording prompting them to dial ten digits Sunday, if they don’t. Marquez-Peterson says telephone providers had adequate notice this was coming and she’s confident they’re ready technologically.
