Sayer Fire Burns 20 Miles Southeast Of Tusayan

The Sayer Fire ignited in Kaibab National Forest Sunday and is now burning at 1,049 acres with about 50 percent containment. Crews completed burnout operations along nearby roads, creating a perimeter around the fire on Tuesday. Smoke may be visible while driving on Highway 64 near the fire. It is burning near power lines, but APS is monitoring the situation and the fire is not an immediate threat. The fire’s forward progress has stopped and no further growth is expected. The fire was initially caused by a lightning strike that struck on Friday. Firefighters will continue to monitor and patrol the perimeter of the fire.
