Report: Recent Fatal Plane Crash In Winslow Killed Former IndyCar Driver

A former IndyCar driver was reportedly one of two people were killed when the airplane they were in crashed near Winslow last week. “ABC-15” reports 71-year-old Bill Whittington was killed when the plane he was in crashed in an area north of Interstate-40 and near the State Route 87 junction. Navajo County Sheriff’s deputies were joined by Winslow Police, DPS and Winslow Fire crews. When they arrived the plane was on fire and was quickly put out by firefighters. Emergency crews found the two people in the plane with fatal injuries. Whittington was a fixture in auto racing in the late 70s and early 80s. Bill and his brother Don won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979. The cause of the accident isn’t known and remains under investigation.
