“Juneteenth” is now a new federal holiday. It celebrates the anniversary of June 19th, 1865, when a Union Army general proclaimed the end of slavery in Texas. It all happened more than two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and is considered by many as the official end of slavery in the United States. President Biden signed the bill into law making June 19th a national holiday starting this year at a ceremony Thursday. Most federal employees will have Friday off for observance of the holiday. Juneteenth is the latest federal holiday since Martin Luther King Junior Day was made a national holiday in 1983.
