Fire managers on the Verde Ranger District of the Prescott National Forest will conduct grassland burns between today and the end of July. Five burns are planned in the Agua Fria grasslands east of Interstate-17 and south of I-17 and the Highway 169 junction. The goal of the burns is to improve native vegetation conditions and distribution by reducing shrub and juniper encroachment into grasslands and reduce current stands of brush by 70-percent. When burns are taking place, smoke will be visible from I-17, Highway 169, the Verde Valley, Dewey-Humboldt and areas near the burn sites. If you come across a burn, use caution while driving through smoke. Burns will take place when conditions are most favorable.
