Overnight camping in six areas of the Tonto National Forest near Payson is being restricted due to overuse. Officials say restrictions went into effect last month at three campsites on the East Verde River, See Canyon on Christopher Creek, Bear Flat on Tonto Creek and Webber Creek. The restrictions were put into place to regrow plants and grass in the areas. Each restricted area covers 200 feet on either side of the water. The order is in effect until April of 2024, but it could be lifted earlier if the areas recover. Visitors are still allowed to use the area during the daytime. Any violations of the order could result in fines of five-thousand dollars per person, or ten-thousand dollars per organization, and six months in prison.
