One person was killed and several others were injured Saturday night after a single-vehicle accident in Cornville. Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene at 11-thousand-400 Willow Point Road at around 7 p.m. The area is located east of Highway 89 and south of Page Springs on a dirt road. When authorities arrived they found a red Nissan hatchback on its side. The driver, 24-year-old Matthew Mattias of Cottonwood, was pronounced dead at the scene. Four other passengers, three were teenagers, were injured but their injuries were non life-threatening. Officials say the group was returning from a trip to the Verde River when the driver, who allegedly had been drinking alcohol, intentionally began to swerve in the road for “fun.” He lost control of the vehicle and rolled it onto its side. The driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt along with most of the passengers.
