One Dead, Multiple Injured After A River Boat Flipped Over On The Colorado River Saturday

One person was killed and four others were injured when the river boat they were in flipped on the Colorado River near Bedrock Rapid Saturday. The Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report of the incident at around 2:12 p.m. National Park officials say 67-year-old Ronald Vanderlugt was one of five people who spilled into the river at the rapid. Members of the group pulled him out of the water and he was unresponsive. CPR was immediately started on the man. Park rangers were flown to the location. When they arrived Vanderlugt was pronounced dead. Four other patients were treated and flown to the South Rim Helibase for additional treatment. All had non-critical injuries. Vanderlugt and the others were on day five of a multi-day commercial river trip. An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
