The Navajo Nation will have a new president. Thirty-five-year-old Buu Nygren defeated incumbent President Jonathan Nez to become the next tribal president. Nygren has never held public office, but was a tribal vice presidential candidate in 2018. Nygren’s running mate is Richelle Montoya. She will become the Navajo Nation’s first female Vice President. Nygren is the husband of District Seven State Representative Jasmine Blackwater Nygren and lives in Red Mesa. Unofficial results have Nygren leading Nez by about 35-hundred votes with 100-percent of the precincts reporting as of Tuesday night.
