NAU long distance runner Luis Grijalva will get to realize his dream after all. The NCAA 5,000-meter runner-up and Big Sky Champion received an advance reentry document Sunday so he can go compete in the Olympics in Japan and return to the U.S. Grijalva is a DACA recipient and came to the United States when he was just a year old from Guatemala and has lived in the U.S. ever since, however he isn’t a citizen or legal permanent resident. In order to compete, he had to get the special permit to leave and then come back. Grijalva is a two-time All-Big Sky award winner in cross country and was named All-American in 2018 and was a member of NAU’s 2017 and 2018 national championship cross country team. Grijalva will run for his home country of Guatemala. The preliminary heats for the final will take place next Tuesday.
