The NAU Lumberjacks got down 14-0 in the first half and reeled off 28 unanswered points to beat Southern Utah, 28-20, Saturday in Cedar City, Utah to complete the sweep of the Thunderbirds and retain the Grand Canyon Trophy. The loss snaps the Lumberjacks’ 12 game road losing streak that dates back to September of 2018. It was also NAU’s first win at Southern Utah since 2013. The Lumberjacks got on the board with nine-seconds left until halftime with a one-yard pass from Keondre Wudtee to running back Kevin Daniels to trim the Southern Utah lead to 14-7. Then NAU scored 21 points in the third quarter and outgained Southern Utah 186-46 in total offense in the quarter. Southern Utah scored late in the game, but it wasn’t enough as NAU held off the Thunderbirds to get the win. Wudtee was 23-for-35 for 289 yards with a touchdown passing and two rushing touchdowns in the win. George Robinson had 18 carries for 82 yards and a touchdown for the Lumberjacks as they improve to 2-2 on the season. NAU will wrap up the short spring schedule at home Saturday against the Idaho Vandals. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
