It was the “Kevin Daniels Show” as the NAU Lumberjacks ended the 2021 season on a high note, beating the Cal Poly Mustangs on the road, 45-21 Saturday. The freshman rushed for 280 yards and five touchdowns, four coming in a 31 point second quarter. One of the four scores, was a 90-yard run, which is the longest in NAU history. The 280 yards rushing is also the most rushing yards by one player this season in the FCS. The Glendale High School product also eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for a season in the game, which is something that hasn’t happened at NAU since 2015. Even though Daniels’ game raised eyebrows, it was the Lumberjacks defense that set Daniels, and the NAU offense, up for success. The defense picked off former Higley High quarterback Spencer Brasch three times and forced a fumble, all during the second quarter. Even though NAU put together one of the most dominant quarters of football in school history, there was one crazy blemish. Luis Aguilar attempted a 53-yard field goal at the end of the first half, but it fell short. It was caught in the end zone by Cal Poly’s Xavier Oliphant and returned 109 yards for the touchdown. NAU finished with 495 yards of total offense, with 321 yards coming on the ground. The Jacks finish the season 5-6 overall and 4-4 in the Big Sky and look toward 2022 with a lot of optimism as they return many starters on both sides of the ball.
