J.W. Powell Blvd Bridge Over Interstate 17 Replacement Work Begins April 1st

The Arizona Department of Transportation plans to replace the J.W. Powell Boulevard Bridge over Interstate 17 starting April 1st, weather permitting. The $8.2 million project will build a new bridge right next to the old one and is set to be completed by the end of the year. While detours will sometimes be in place, traffic will continue to use the old bridge for most of the construction. Pedestrians and cyclists will not be able to cross the bridge starting April 3rd through the duration of construction. Alternate routes will be available. Traffic will continue to use the twin roundabouts west of the current bridge, but roundabout approaches must be realigned to fit the bridge’s new location. Drivers should watch for construction, slow down and be aware of flag crews directing traffic. Construction will be scheduled from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays from 5 a.m. to noon on Fridays. No work is planned on weekends or holidays. For real-time highway conditions, visit ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at or the AZ511 app.
