It was an icy mess on Interstate-40 in eastern Arizona Thursday morning. ADOT closed the major interstate in both directions between Holbrook and Sanders, which is a 70 mile stretch, at around 5 a.m. The highway was closed for about four hours due to numerous accidents and slide-offs on the eastbound side due to extreme icy conditions. Crews were able to remove wrecks from at least nine different areas and let the highway thaw before it reopened at around 9 a.m. DPS says of the accidents, there was only one that had injuries.
