If a bill is signed into law, harassing a police service animal will become a class one misdemeanor. The bill’s sponsor, Legislative District 6 Representative Walt Blackman says the bill would count that harassment as animal cruelty. Blackman says “it’s going to deter folks from messing with these working animals.” He adds: “when these animals are harassed, or taken out of their zone to protect and serve and to act as a tool for law enforcement then someone at the end of the day gets hurt.” House Bill 2421 could put mean jail time for those who chose to harass these animals. The bill next heads to the Senate Rules Committee.
