The Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board voted to continue the policy of requiring the wearing of face masks while on school property during regularly scheduled governing board meeting Tuesday. The action comes after a Superior Court Judge ruled Monday that the law prohibiting school districts from requiring masks was unconstitutional and unenforceable. School districts that wish to require masks may lawfully do so unless an emergency stay is issued or another Arizona court rules otherwise. The CDC said last week that schools in Maricopa and Pima counties were three-and-a-half times more likely to have COVID-19 outbreaks if they didn’t have a mask requirement at the start of school, compared with schools that required universal masking on day one. FUSD superintendent Michael Penca says “The Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board and I believe that consistent and layered use of the available mitigation strategies gives us the best chance of protecting the health and safety of our students and staff, and maintaining in-person learning throughout the 2021-2022 school year.” Penca says the district will notify parents and students when the district intends to make any changes to its mitigation plan.
