Flagstaff Medical Center Announces Nurse Sylvia Goldberg As Winner Of March Of Dimes Heroes In Action Award

Northern Arizona Healthcare announced the Flagstaff Medical Center Nurse Recipient of March of Dimes Heroes In Action Award Thursday. The award recognizes nurses in Arizona that make a difference to a patient’s well-being in non-traditional settings. The winner is Post-Anesthesia Care Unit RN, Sylvia Goldberg. Goldberg also recently received the national March of Dimes Heroes in Action Innovative and Non-Traditional Nursing Award. Goldberg is being recognized for her efforts in reducing waste sent to landfills by recycling and repurposing surgical wrap. Goldberg was one of the co-founders of the Blue Wrap Project in 2019, an initiative at Flagstaff Medical Center that keeps surgical wrap out of landfills by finding a new use for it. Over the past few years, FMC staff have saved approximately 60-thousand pounds of surgical wrap from going into landfills. Goldberg says she is honored to have received this award. She says, “The Blue Wrap Project couldn’t have been possible without my coworkers at FMC, as well as community members, such as out local sewists.” Other finalists for the March of Dimes Heroes In Action include Jessie Strength, RN at FMC, Shannon Skirvin, RN at FMC, and Elena Bermudez, RN at Verde Valley Medical Center.
