Senior guard Teagan Martin scored nine of her 16 points in the fourth quarter as the Flagstaff Eagles beat the Saguaro Sabercats, 57-55, at home Tuesday night. The Eagles trailed 44-40 at the end of three quarters, but outscored Saguaro 17-11 in the fourth to get the win. McKenzie Mason led all scorers with 24 points for Flagstaff. Alexa Simpson scored 21 for the Sabercats. Flagstaff head coach Tyrone Johnson says they have to be ready to get their opponents best game, every game out being the defending 4A state champions. He says, “we have to be ready for everybody’s best, but then we have to get to our standards because we have a certain standard that we want to play and if we’re not playing at that standard then it doesn’t really matter what people bring.” Johnson adds, “we have to play at our standard in order to be successful.” Before the game, Coach Johnson was honored as the NFHS Arizona Girls Basketball Coach of the Year for last season. The Eagles are 2-1 on the season and will head to Gilbert Friday to take on the Mesquite Wildcats.
