Flagstaff Girls, Coconino Boys Win In The First Round Of The Flagstaff Basketball Rivalry

The Flagstaff Eagles and Coconino Panthers renewed their rivalry on the court Tuesday night at Coconino High School. The girls took the court first as the fourth-ranked Eagles battled the 12th-ranked Panthers. The Eagles struggled from the start as the Panthers kept pace with Flagstaff, as the Eagles had a 26-23 at halftime. The Panthers went cold, except for Wynter Huskie who scored 18 points, as the Eagles won 65-41. Gracelyn Nez led the Eagles with 20 points as Flagstaff remains unbeaten in region. It was Flagstaff’s 13th straight win over Coconino in girls basketball. On the boys side, the game started out with a bang as Coconino’s Rufus Hobbs dunked the ball over Flagstaff center Nick Morrow, who then scored the next trip down the floor. The teams went back and forth as the Panthers took a three-point lead after the first quarter. Coconino extended its lead to seven at halftime en route to a 65-42 win. The Panthers had four players in double-figures led by Ivory Washington with 13. It was the fifth straight win over Flagstaff by the Panthers. Coconino will host Lee Williams Friday night, while Flagstaff will travel to Cottonwood to take on Mingus, also on Friday.
