The Flagstaff Airport was the main topic of discussion at last night’s Flagstaff City Council work session. Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Heidi Hansen gave a presentation on the efforts made by city staff to increase the amount of people traveling out of the airport. Through these efforts, the Flagstaff Airport has been able to secure nonstop flights to Denver with United Airlines starting March 31st, as well as a route to Dallas starting April 1st. Attaining this lease agreement with United Airlines is essential in bringing in more airlines because it will increase tourism and business growth, something these companies look for when signing new leases. Aside from this, Tuesday was the 100 Year Anniversary of Grand Canyon National Park. This weekend congressman Tom O’Halleran announced his support of a bill permanently banning uranium mining near the Grand Canyon. The council thought it was important to reaffirm 2017’s resolution to oppose uranium mining and transportation in the city of Flagstaff, as well as 2018’s resolution to withdraw federal lands from new uranium mining for at least 20 years. Council will be back at city hall for a regular meeting next Tuesday.
