Flagstaff And Salpointe Catholic Square Off For The 4A Girls State Basketball Championship

The second-seeded Salpointe Catholic Lancers will face fifth-seeded Flagstaff for the 4A Girls State Basketball Championship Monday night at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix. It’s been 30 years Tuesday since the Flagstaff Eagles girls team played for, and won, a state title. The Lancers are looking for their first-ever title, but it’s the second straight season they are playing for one. Last year, they lost to Seton Catholic in the state title game, 70-62. Salpointe is led by senior Kylee Callahan, who averages just over 16 points a game for the Lancers, who have a talented lineup with some freshman playing some big minutes. For the Eagles, senior Gracelyn Nez has been the go to for four years in Flagstaff. She has upped her game so far in the playoffs, defending the other team’s best player and has been dominant. She will get to go out playing for a state championship. She said Thursday after their semifinal win over Shadow Mountain, “I’m so excited, this is like a dream come true.” However, Nez says “but it’s not just about going to the championship, it’s to win the championship. We will see who wants it more.” The 4A Girls State Championship Game will take place at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix. We will have the game on KAFF Country 93.5/AM 930 and streaming online at starting at 5:30 p.m.
