A student at Holbrook Indian School was killed when the bus the student was in, was involved in an accident on eastbound Interstate-40 near Sanders Sunday. DPS says the bus slowed down in traffic, near another accident, when it was hit from behind by a semi-truck at around 9:30 a.m. The bus then pushed into the vehicle in front of it. The school released a statement on its Facebook page saying the accident killed a student and injured six others. The victim’s family says the victim was Kiarra Gordon. The family said in a statement on Facebook that Kiarra was a “beautiful, sweet and talented young woman who was always a joy to be around.” The bus was transporting a group of 19 staff and students on a field trip to Window Rock. The school says “our concerns now are for our parents and families as we uphold and grieve with them.” Navajo County officials say “we offer our deepest condolences, as our thoughts and prayers are sent to those directly impacted by the tragic accident.” The school asks people be respectful as they work through the tragedy as a school community. The interstate reopened Sunday afternoon after being closed for several hours. The accident is under investigation. The family says donations for Kiarra’s family can be made through Zelle.
