EXCLUSIVE: State Education Leader Tom Horne Talks Raising Academics At State Schools Thursday In Flagstaff

Raising Arizona’s academic results is high on the list of things Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne wants to accomplish during his run as the state’s education leader. Horne was in Flagstaff Thursday speaking at Northern Arizona Council of Governments luncheon at Little America. Horne tells KAFF News the “mission statement that I adopted is the State Department of Education is a service organization, dedicated to raising academic results and empowering parents.” Horne added, “I created improvement teams that I had the last time I was in office that go out to help the schools that need help. That’s an example of what I’m doing now to raise academics.” He says one of his main goals is to get Arizona’s percentages up to among the nation’s best, but there’s a long way to go. Arizona remains in the 40s when it comes to K-12 education.
